Rostov-on-Don is a city in southern Russia. The Rostov Regional Museum of Local History has collections on Cossack lore and war history. Nearby, Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts displays Russian art from the 16th–20th centuries. The Rostov Academic Drama Theater of Maxim Gorky, built in the shape of a tractor, presents classic and contemporary plays. Outside, Theater Square has fountains and a Ferris wheel.
The central, 19th-century 1st of May Park has a neoclassical rotunda and several cafes. Nearby, October Revolution Park is home to a skating rink, carnival rides and a soccer field. Locals play chess in Gorky Park, which also offers gardens and walking paths. West of the center, the Southern Federal University has a sprawling botanical garden with plants from around the world. Laboratorium is an interactive science museum with exhibits on physics and technology. North of here, the vast Rostov Zoo includes leopards, elephants and apes. Farther northeast, H2O water park has water slides, pools and a spa, plus bars and cafes.
